Scalp Acupuncture: What is it and what is it used to treat?

Scalp acupuncture has been described as the most significant development in Chinese acupuncture in the past 60 years. It integrates traditional Chinese needling techniques with Western medical knowledge of the areas within the cerebral cortex.

Scalp acupuncture can help with headaches and other chronic brain-related pain. It works by stimulating reflex areas within the scalp through special manipulation.

Combining TCM and Western medical knowledge

Scalp acupuncture has been explored and developed in China since the 1950s but it is Dr Shun Fa Jiao, a neurosurgeon from China’s Shanxi province, who is the recognised founder of Chinese scalp acupuncture.

From 1971, Dr Jiao undertook the scientific exploration and charting of scalp correspondences. He combined his understanding of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with traditional Chinese acupuncture techniques to develop a radical new method for affecting the functions of the central nervous system.

Scalp acupuncture has been shown to be a very effective in treating acute and chronic disorders of the central nervous system. It often produces amazing results with just a few needles, and it usually brings about immediate improvement, sometimes within several seconds.

What health issues are treated with scalp acupuncture?

Modern Chinese scalp acupuncture can be used to treat a range of health issues including:

  • Headaches
  • Stroke dysphagia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Monoplegia (motor impairment in one limb)
  • Motor neuron disease
  • Quadriplegia

Scalp acupuncture for children

Chinese scalp acupuncture is safe for children, and it may assist with autism spectrum disorders and motor dysfunction. Scalp acupuncture may also improve the symptoms of paediatric cerebral palsy, promoting the child’s mental and physiological development, and improving their gross motor function. It has been described as being a more effective treatment than conventional rehabilitation.
